The Paredes Institute for Women’s Imaging
Dr. Ellen Paredes was a world renowned specialist of the early detection of breast cancer and an outstanding and sought after speaker, she lectured extensively from Sweden to Argentina and from Canada to Brazil, and most of the countries in between.
She left her position as the Chief of the Breast Imaging Center and as the Veronica Donovan Sweeney Professor of Radiology at the Medical College of Virginia to found her Institute, which opened in June of 2005. Her bright career was distinguished by many accomplishments, she was the valedictorian of her high school, graduated from Bryn Mawr College and earned her medical degree at the West Virginia University at Morgantown, who honored her in 2008 as the West Virginia University School of Medicine distinguished alumni.
She served as president of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Radiology, was selected the YWCA Outstanding Woman for Health & Science and Local Legends from Virginia. She received honorary degrees from Canada and Europe, was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the American Cancer Society, the Medical Society of Virginia, fellow of the American College of Radiology, and member of the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Breast Imaging.
She also held a faculty position at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Dr. Paredes had extensive experience in the field of breast cancer detection and had more than 70 published articles, numerous book chapters, presentations and abstracts and the author of a medical textbook Atlas of film screen mammography, completed in her 3rd edition and translated to other languages including Spanish and Chinese. She wrote numerous editorials, one of which dating back to October 6, 2005 says “as I left the University, I received many calls and letters, one of which was written by one of our 4th year residents”, he wrote “I thank you for taking a leap of faith showing all of your residents and colleagues that there are times in life that require stepping outside your comfort zone and trusting not only in yourself but in those around you.” “Those words inspire me each day and I framed and hung it in my office.” These words also recognized her unique courage, dedication, commitment and faith in what she did and is a guide to her Institute.
